Adam's Review

The Good:
Overall I feel like the game had a strong start. I really enjoyed the art style, the feeling of combat, the banter and the overall vibe of the game. It did a really great job of setting up a fun place to explore.

Combat was fast and lethal, and that's something I really like. Fights happen pretty quickly and I do like that if you know what you're doing, you can get a kill quick, but if not you can quickly loose the upper hand. Also I truly apricate any game that allows you to clear out a screen, and not have enemies respawn. I personally find it super satisfying to clear out a map, and then be able to freely walk in it after without any threat to danger because you beat everything.

The map and quest system were good too. I like to know where I am and Death Trash helps the player from getting lost or not knowing what to do next. It doesn't to a TON to guide the player, but just enough to make it so you never feel lost of not know what to do next.

The Bad:
Bugs:
I ran into some glitches in the game, and I'll chock that up to early access. Things like enemies not losing aggro ever, or things not dying. It didn't happen often, but it did call for me to die to reset the instance and that always fixed it.

Quality of Life:
There's some quality of life issues that really chipped away at me.
1) Enemies at the entrance of a level could knock you thru the door, forcing a quick save. This was SUPER annoying twice because it left me in a state with no health, no items and no save to fall back on (because "walking" overwrites your quicksave)
2) The Fight, eat, switch off your item to puke, puke, switch back to item loop I found a little annoying. Yes, I know you can do this all pretty quickly with the item select ring, but I was doing this so much - it felt like puking should just have it's own dedicated button since you will be doing it so much, and so many times did I forget to put my item back on after that leaving me with puke equipped accidently in combat.

Overall:
After about 7 hours I felt like I was getting tired of the game. Weapons all felt a bit the same, and picking whatever did the most damage always made the most sense when it came to Melee & Ranged weapons. Nothing fundamentally changed the style of gameplay. I ended up with about 250 gold by the time I decided to stop, leaving with hardly enough money to even buy 1 new skill. In a game that is so combat focused, it was sad to me that I ended up game with pretty much the same items and skills I started with, but that just did more damage.

There was a lack of bosses as well, I feel like most of the combat was the same enemies as well, just laid out differently.

I wont be continuing to play to the end, but I did enjoy my time playing.

Overall: 7/10

John's Review

Overall I really enjoyed it. I completed everything that I could find, so until more content is added I’ve done it all. I’m going to try and break down my thought into categories:

Art/visuals: 8/10. Really solid, I just wanted more variation. Too many environments looked very similar. That said, we are confined to a small section of the planned release map, and one section you could enter right away was a mountain area, so if that indicates the change in scenery I’m confident in how it will look by the end.

Map: I really liked the over world map and traveling on it. It is simple and not much going on, but it makes travel feel fun, and the random encounters were great. I ran into merchants with rare gear, pilgrims telling me to visit certain areas, and enemies. That said, I wish that you couldn’t easily run from enemy encounters. The map also appears like it’s going to be massive by the end, if you looked around the edges and stuff.

Music/sound: 4/10. The menu theme was eerie and cool, but past that there was no music but low droning….very boring and even annoying. Hope they fix that by the end. The sound like gunshots were decent enough I guess, but nothing fantastic.

Combat: 7/10. very fun and figuring out how to best dodge certain guns or enemies was difficult, and multiple enemies often felt like a real challenge. That said I wish there was more depth to it, like combos or something. At one point I bought a block upgrade, and that elevates things a bit, but it needs more things like that.

Scavenging/crafting: 7/10. It’s essential to do, I just wish there was more variation in items, which would make certain areas like rooms feel less empty. That said when I bought the Medicine recipe it was a game changer. I feel like the blip tool is almost a requirement as well.

Variation: just as a general note, I wanted more variation in the game overall. Enemy types, weapons, materials, environments, encounters, npcs, missions. What was there was great and solid, they just need to add more to keep it exciting across time.

The finished game: obviously this was early access. One thing I took note of right away is that the game mentioned the final version will not have a save menu. Now weather that means there are no saves, or if it auto saves, or will have save locations in the game, I’m not sure. But it really made me think about how drastically this would change how I approach combat. I wasn’t really afraid to die since there wasn’t much punishment. There needs to be one though, and if the punishment in the final version is to have to start over, we’ll, I’d be very careful to pick fight only when needed.

I didn’t play around with the augments that much, like lighting strikes or acid blood or whatever, since they cause infection, but that could end up being one of the cooler parts in the final game.

Generally, this game is a great early version, has tons of room to improve and I hope it does. Will play the rest when it’s out.

Shawn's Review

Thought it was a lot of fun, gave me a lot of fallout vibes but 2d. This came with a lot of disappointments though, probably mostly due to the game being finished.

What I liked:

The gameplay loop of new types of enemies, rare weapon drops, selling excess items, experimenting, and buying upgrades was super fun and rewarding. There were other fallout style elements like pickpocketing, leveling certain stats etc that felt a little bit less utilized or important, but overall a super fun loop. I have a soft spot for character customization too, and liked changing outfits and experimenting with builds.

Liked the towns and npcs that were in the game a lot, the setting of a post apocalypse that is drowning in all the food you can eat but its gross growing meat is also super cool to me.

Combat is super fun and satisfying. I played on the hardest difficulty (which means you get stunned like enemies do) and it made some encounters super hard to overcome, but it always felt within my control to overcome with skill without "cheesing it", which is better than fallout.

I thought puking was a great / interesting way to nerf the electricity move so that if you played right, you could skip the "cooldown" that happens from not being able to do it again until you puke.

I LOVED the escorting the blind guy mission. Super challenging and fun.

What I didn't like:

Questlines were always over far too quickly, and didn't feel expansive or deep. A lot of meeting the wise guy, the wise guy sending you to another wise guy, then that guy sending you to another wise guy.

Some of the mods were okay, but I never found one that felt more effective than the first one you get (the electric blast) and would have preferred a bigger variety of weapons instead of mods.

For a game that doesn't need to rely on voice acting, I would have expected a much bigger variety of npc dialogue, and many more side quests. It felt super lacking, and I went out of my way to talk to all the npcs I found.

The environments were way too basic and samey. Same with the music.

Not a huge fan of a lack of a "true" overworld. Would prefer a link to the past style overworld with section to section rather than the current implementation of the fast traveling. Also, the variety of random encounters was lacking. Always either demon dogs, a random merchant, or guys with guns. It made me want to avoid them when they should be interesting if they're replacing a true overworld.

I didn't like that killing NPCs didn't seem to have any in game logic. I killed the guy who was hammering the meet in the first town (because i wanted his hammer) and I thought that the NPC selling meat (which he was getting from hammer guy) would have reacted or stopped having meat to sell, but that didn't happen. I get that the game is unfinished, but dialogue with no voice acting, it should have been a no brainer to make dialogue for those types of situations. Felt disappointed numerous times from that not happening and it took me out of the experience.
