Adam's Review
Overall I think DMC5 has the best combat in any action game to date. It's one of the few games where the word "Skill expression" I really applies, as combat in the game goal is about clearing out enemies quick, but taking the extra time to enjoy.
@Smormu
The idea of Style rankings being the benchmark on how good you're doing versus focusing on damage or fast clears as action games often fall into the pitfall of finding the "optimal combo / strat" cc @Smormu . Often once that "optimal" thing figured out, straying from this just feels like a waste of time. DMC combats this by telling the player they ARENT doing a good job just by doing the strongest move and giving the player a reason to really utilize & explore the full move sets of every character.
For example @pothole master , if I found a move in god of war that does a lot of damage that's better then everything else, chances our I'm just going to try to spam the move / always wait for an opening to use that move and start ignoring some of the moveset. Coming up with a way to prevent a player form "exploiting" the best moves with enemies patterns and such are one way GOW does, but still almost unavoidable for some of the moveset to get left behind which has always bothered me.
@pothole master While I don't know about areas that have more cannon fodder for fighting (And I'm not sure how well the game explains this) but you can kill things almost in one hit with most characters. For example, with Nero if you are able to max rev his sword when swinging. It's got a timing to it and I don't know if the game explains it, but you can have you sword automatically rev when you swing versus charging it before hard by timing it as the same time the swing happens. The more revs your sword has the high the auto charge will be if your timing is perfect. It's got a really great rythm to charging the sword each swing during a combo. If you're good at this, you can one hit almost everything apart from bosses & subbosses.
@eric yo I agree - the biggest fault with the game is
1) including V as a character. He's not fun to play as, but I did like what be brought to the story.
2) Breaking your arms to switch them is so stupid. I was hoping to this day they would patch that out and allow you to hotswap them somehow.
DMC5 is at its best when you're enjoying the cheesiness & over the top action of the cutscenes & having fun being creative with your combos and exploring cool ways to get an SSS ranking in each encounter. If you're looking for anything else in the game you probably wont find it, from start to finish the drive of a person who plays a game like this is normally "i can't wait to try out more combos / unlock new moves to make cooler combos" and that's it.
Overall I'd give it a 9/10 because of the two issues above. I also feel like the setting of the game was a bit too dark visually. DMC4 has lots of bright well lit areas with I really missed.
Nero is the best character
Dante is fun
V fucking sucks

John's Review
Ok, here is my review. Not necessarily like a formal review or anything, just a bunch of thoughts.
1. Wasn’t aware it was made in re engine. Nice. Obviously graphics were sick, but like re, face animation are kinda janky.
2. I played all the other dmc games aside from the reboot titled DMC. That said, the last one I played was 4, and that was all the way back when ps3 launched. Long time ago. Since then I feel like my tastes have changed significantly. Which leads me to my 3rd point.
3. The game is obviously intended to be over the top, and be “epic” and “badass” to the point that it’s built into the scoring system, where you are rated on how cool the combos were. To go off an a tangent for a sec, I prefer playing as efficiently as possible, and though it’s more nuanced than this I think it’s odd to do an inefficient combo when you could just get the job done faster. That’s why I like games where things like elemental damage exist, where you can’t use fire weapons on fire enemies. And maybe I didn’t play far enough, but I didn’t see anything like that. But back to my point, being “badass.” I loved it back in the day. Engine swords, gauntlets, shooting enemies into the air, the heavy music, the anime level characters being like, “heh, that was pretty good, you made me use 5% of my power.” But now it makes me cringe. Moments made me feel like I was watching the final fantasy “must kill chaos” game.
4. All that said, it’s kind of charming in a way, its very self aware, like they are trying to poke fun at it than take it seriously. That said I’d wish they’d pick a lane.
5. Once the combos and shop opens up it gets a lot better, and once you get into bigger areas that. Don’t feel like hallways. I like exploring the nooks and crannies.
6. After that big boss fight at the start that you are supposed to lose I thought it was so dumb how there were people in a crowd just watching, and Nero is like “I know demons are about to kill everyone, but imma walk away all cool.
Done with numbering now for no reason
Once you unlock essential skills like dash it much nicer, but even then I kinda felt like my movement was limited. Yeah I could grapple to enemies, but for the most part I felt like getting around in combat was slow, especially in lock on. I felt like lock put me at a disadvantage rather than help a lot.
I know I mentioned the heavy music earlier. I don’t like it in combination with everything if that makes sense, but I like it as a standalone element.
V is stupid and cringe.
I loved the destructive environments and the effects on animated attacks. They all were very well done and super crisp. There was this part right after the first mission where there are like burnt body statues in the streets, and they turn to ash and float away thanos style. One was holding a balloon and as soon as the statue collapsed the balloon floated away. The scene felt well crafted for just a walk through area, and that well crafted and set up scene type thing kept up the rest of the time I played. No area felt empty, boring, or unimaginative.
Like dmc 4, I wad just like “I want to be Dante, fuck Nero.” That said, since Nero has been established since then he wasn’t as annoying to play to me a he was in 4, while I also weirdly preferred his combat in 4, or at least I feel like I liked it more….can’t remember it well.
I’m gonna play more though. Want to give it more of a chance and think I’ll have more fun as I unlock more.

Shawn's Review
Let me preface by saying I've only played for 3.5 hours so far and have had virtually no time for games. In that time I've:
Played as each character
Fought a couple bosses with each character
Completed 6 chapters
I'm usually not a huge fan of hack/slash style games like this, God of War was an exception. I don't think that this game lives up to what I loved about gow but I've been enjoying it a lot more than I expected.
Tone wise, I find it to be almost always charming once you accept what it is trying to do, doesn't take itself too seriously.
The gameplay outside of combat feels pretty useless so far, mostly linear with only a few nooks and crannies to check out. Not really a dig at the game as the combat as fun, but almost wish enemies were more abundant or there was like a one hit kill enemy you can plow through while moving through areas or something.
Overall liking the game a lot so far and plan to continue playing it until I get bored. Haven't maxed out upgrades so I'm sure the gameplay has more depth to show.

Eric's Review
DMC5 8/10 Overall a good action game, but fails to please throughout the entire experience.
Story 8/10 - Interesting twist. Cool ending. Too many corny one liners.
Gameplay 7.5/10
Nero 8/10 - Gameplay is very basic until you unlock the rev mechanics. Devil arms breaking isn't fun...(BOTW flashbacks)
V 5/10 - Is ok in general, but when compared to Nero and Dante, he just falls flat. The least fun character to play.
Dante 10/10 - A lot of weapon unlocks, 4 different stances. The most versatile and fun character to play.
Graphics 8.5/10 - Overall good graphics, but nothing that really makes you say wow. Frames are solid. No noticeable dips that affected gameplay.
Music 8/10 - Nero's battle theme literally carried this score. Dante's is ok. V; forgettable.
